HISTORY OF LEWIS & CLARK BRIDGE
Constructed in 1929, at the time of it's completion it was the longest and highest cantilever truss span in the United States. With a main span of 1,200 feet, it is still one of the longest historic cantilever truss spans surviving today. |
Originally named the Longview Bridge, it opened in 1930 as a privately owned toll bridge. It was purchased in 1947 by the Washington State Toll Bridge Authority and in 1980, the bridge was rededicated as the Lewis and Clark Bridge in honor of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. |
The roadway spans the river 210 feet above the water, and the top steel spans it at 340 feet. The designers claim that any vessel then in existence, including a fully rigged clipper ship, can pass under it. The bridge continues to carry heavy traffic in an industrial setting. |
